Mary Henderson Log Cabin

Laurens, South Carolina

Jerry and Bobbie Stoddard of J&B Farm have custody of a Henderson family treasure - The Widow Mary Henderson Log Cabin located at Laurens, SC. They have lovingly restored the cabin to a show state that they could place it on a regular historical tour if they desired. One of the reasons that they wanted to do all this work was so their grandchildren would know something of their heritage.

Please understand that this cabin was lived in even before the first U.S. Census was taken in 1790 - over two hundred and seventeen years ago! The cabin dates back to before 1785. Not many families across America can say they have such a place to visit except through memories and photographs. We want to thank the Stoddard family for spending their time and money to make this all happen.

The Widow Mary Henderson log cabin received its first public recognition outside the family when a photo of the cabin was placed on the cover of the Piedmont Rural Telephone Cooperative phone book with the date of March 1996.

Our first known ancestors to live on the property were Mary Henderson (b. ca 1740-) and her children, Rev. Hugh Henderson (1765-1844), William Henderson (1772-1806), John Henderson (1770- ), James Henderson (1774-2 Sep 1846), (Our Ancestor), Daughter Henderson who married Levi Hill before 1800, and possibly Andrew Henderson who was married to Candance. Search as we may we have never found any records of Mary's husband, although he would have been the right age for service in the Revolution.

Bobbie Stoddard's father, James Wesley Fowler, said the log cabin originally built close to that 200 plus year old cedar tree was put on logs and rolled to where it presently sits after the larger family home was built. This larger family home where Bobbie was born burned in 1978 - a sad, sad day. It had been built in the early 1800's.

The old family cemetery up on the hill of the property has about 17 hand-hewn stone markers and one tombstone that is readable, Elizabeth Brock Henderson (1806-1842), wife of Mary's grandson Mastin Lee Henderson. There are many more stones in the nearby underbrush.

B-  March 10th, 1806, D- April 4th, 1842
Aged 37 years and 24 days
Wife of Mastin Henderson
She was a devoted member of Mt, Pleasant Church

Troy Jones, a noted Laurens historian, told Bobbie that Widow Mary Henderson and the first James Henderson were buried on the hill also. Troy was a Henderson descendant and that fact had been passed down through his family. Another stone with writing that is unreadable except the date of April 4, 1843 was recently unearthed.

Rabon Creek

Jerry and Bobbie Stoddard of the J&B Farm, opened up their farm to the Henderson families across the nation and had a "Henderson Back to Our Roots Family Reunion" on May 27, 2000. Cousins from as far away as Alabama, Texas, and California attended the special homecoming. Jerry and Bobbie were splendid hosts and gave everyone a chance to tour the whole 232 acre J&B Farm which included the log cabin, the family cemetery and a trip by Rabon Creek which runs through the property. There is a certain peace in walking over the land of one's ancestors and see where they lived and were buried. Our reunion meal and meeting was held at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church meeting hall. The guest speaker was well known Henderson historian, Robert H. Henderson, from Greer, SC.

Here is a pen and ink drawing by daughter-in-law, Margaret Stoddard, of the "Old Cedar Tree." She calls the drawing, "An Old Friend." We had to modify the drawing slightly to be able to get it on the web page and we apologize for the difference.
